Terescenko Wins Florida South Event on Lake Okeechobee

ATHENS, Ala. –  Alex Terescenko of West Palm Beach, FL won the American Bass Anglers Open Series Florida South tournament, held May 12th on Lake Okeechobee.

Running out of Roland Martin Marina & Resort in Clewiston, FL Alex caught five bass weighing 27.77 pounds including a 6.64-pound kicker. For the Boater Division victory, Terescenko took home a check for $5000.

“I was fishing down South today. I had a pretty good practice for this event, but by 11:00 am today, things really slowed down for me. I ended up catching my fish on a swim-jig and a popping frog in the wire grass. I lost a couple of 6-pounders today that just came unbuttoned,” Terescenko said.

In second for the boaters, Justin Morgan of Okeechobee, FL landed a five-bass tournament limit going 26.36 pounds. He collected $1000 for the effort.

“I caught my fish on the North end of the lake on a top-water frog and a Bass Assassin Tap-Out in black/blue color. It was really slow this morning and around noon today I found a stretch and caught what I had,” Morgan said.

Randy Fulford of Okeechobee, FL took third for the boaters with five bass going 25.16 pounds. He earned $650 for his catch.

“I caught my fish on a Gambler Fat Ace pitching to isolated cattails. We caught a ton of fish today,” Fulford said.

Finishing fourth, Reinaldo “Papo” Rojas Jr of Clewiston, FL landed a five-bass limit for 23.43 pounds.  Jessie Mizell of Sarasota, FL rounded out the top five boaters with five-bass limit for 22.98 pounds.

The largest bass of the boaters was caught by John Tavano of Sebring, FL that weighed 7.97-pounds. Tavano won the big bass award of $580 with that catch.

“I caught that fish on my third cast this morning on a Gambler Burner Worm. I was fishing the Harney Pond area of the lake and stayed there most of the day. “Tavano said.

In the Co-Angler Division, David “Moe” Lane of Sanford, FL won with three bass going 16.25 pounds including a 7.78-pound kicker. He pocketed a check for $1200 for his win.

“I was fishing the north end of the lake today and I caught my fish on a black/blue popping frog. I lost several fish today almost the size of my big bass today. It was a better morning bite for me,”  Lane said.

Taking second for the co-anglers, Dale Tomlinson of Lake Worth, FL brought in a three-bass division limit weighing 14.39 pounds. He collected $500 for the effort.

“I caught my fish on the North end of the lake. I give all the credit for my fish to Randy Fulford. We probably caught fifty fish today and he was culling 3 ½ pounders,” Tomlinson said. “

Brian Yeatts of Palm Springs, FL placed third among the co-anglers with three bass going 13.23 pounds. He earned $350 for his catch.

“I was fishing the South end of the lake today with a Gambler 7-inch worm. The trick for me today was going from a 1/4 oz weight down to a 1/16 oz weight,“ Yeatts said.

In fourth place among the co-anglers, Scott Hopping of Port St Lucie, FL brought in three bass for 12.72 pounds.

Jose Gallardo of Belle Glade, FL rounded out the top five co-anglers with three bass at 12.52 pounds including a big bass that weighed 8.02 pounds. Gallardo pocketed a check for $225 for his finish and an additional $220 for that big bass and was awarded an Abu Garcia Revo SX reel for landing the biggest bass of the tournament with an Abu Garcia reel.

“I caught that big bass on a popping frog up on the North end of the lake. That big bass was the last fish of the day,” Gallardo said.

Slated for September 29th & 30th, the next tournament will be the Area 5 Championship held on the Kissimmee Chain out of Camp Mack in Lake Wales, FL. At the end of the season, the best anglers from across the nation advance the 2019 Ray Scott Championship to be held at Lake Eufaula in Eufaula, Alabama, April 2019.
