Okeechobee Anglers Get Early Christmas Wish

Athens, AL. Anglers fishing the Ram Truck Open Series Area Championship on Lake Okeechobee next weekend will fish the highest water on Okeechobee in Ten Years.

The 8-10” of rain from Hurricanes this summer brought the lake up to 16.3 feet above sea level and today stands at 15.90 (source http://w3.saj.usace.army.mil/h2o/currentLL.shtml ).  The local anglers know this has a big impact on fish movement and the east shore is a hot area with high water.

Topwater becomes a favorite method in December. However, with the high-water, flipping could dominate the tournament. With the high-water, bass and the anglers will be in areas they haven’t been able to reach in years.

In December, Okeechobee is known for giving up some real monster bass. Last December a 10lb 10 ounce was recorded in the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Trophy Catch program with a lot the catches in the eight-pound class.

The current weather forecast for the event couldn't be any better with a midday high forecast at 80 degrees with lightly cloudy skies and light winds.

With ABA anglers being some of the top anglers in the country, it will be interesting to see if they can set some records.

The event held out of Scott Driver park will offer a $10,000 first place to the winning boater and $5,000 to the winning Co-Angler. The anglers competing must have qualified through fishing qualifying events in Central and South Florida.
