Russell Lee Takes the win on Cedar Creek

Russell Lee of Sachse, TX won the American Bass Anglers Ram Truck Open Series Texas East Division, held September 16th, 2017 at Cedar Creek.  Running out of Log Cabin Public Ramp near Malakoff, TX the 51-boat field left at 6:44 AM. For the boaters, 10 places were paid out and it took 13.09 pounds to make the cut.

Lee caught a five-fish limit weighing 20.42 lbs with a healthy 6.28-pound kicker.   For the boater division victory, he took home a check for $5000.

“I had been catching them shallow but went a little deeper today, I didn’t have any specific areas I was catching them in.   I was looking for deeper brush and caught one here, and one there.  I culled quite a bit and had 10 or 12 keepers.  I’m really happy with 20 lbs this for this time of year.” Said Russell.

In second for the boaters, Jackie Jayroe of Royse City, TX landed a five-bass limit weighing 18.10 lbs held up by a 5.61 lb. kicker.  He collected $800 for placing 2nd.

“It normally takes me about 3 trips to catch 18 lbs here but today I did it in one!  I caught my first one about 8:30 but only had 5 bites and made them all count.  I was all over the lake and didn’t catch any of them in the same spot, they all came from different places.  I went big and it turned out ok.” Said Jayroe

Brett McLendon of Gilmer, TX took third for the boaters with a limit of five bass weighing 17.69 lbs and took home a check for $600.00

“It started off pretty good.  I had 3 fish in the boat pretty early.  I moved around a bit and picked up a couple more but ended up finishing off the day in the same area I started in.  I caught the larger fish in that spot so I tried to clean it out and bump my weight up as much as I could.”  Said Brett.

In fourth, Terry peacock of Royse City, TX came in with a solid bag of 15.68 lbs.  Finishing 5th was John Simonof of Jacksonville, AR 15.51 lbs.  John also caught a 5.85 lb. Big Bass of the day on a homemade bladed jig poured on an Owner hook with a V&M baits Baby Swamp Hog trailer.  He fished the bait on a Temple Fork Outfitters rod and 20lb Hi-Seas Quattro fluorocarbon line.

In the Co-Angler Division, Martin Montfort of Corsicana, TX won with three bass going 11.74 lbs.  His victory allowed him to walk away with a check for $1200.00.

“I had my limit by 7:30 and was able to cull 3 or 4 times.  That is the earliest I have had a limit.  I used a Carolina rig to catch most of them but we caught a few towards the end of the day to improve to what I brought in.” Said Matt.

Taking second for the co-anglers, Tom Brouillette of Garland, TX came in weighing a 3-fish limit for 8.59 lbs. His placement earned him a check for $400.

“I had a limit in the boat this morning by 7:40. I caught my first one about 15 minutes in on a spinnerbait then started flipping some docks and finished out my limit.  I culled 3 times throughout the day and then culled my last one about 20 minutes to go.  The spinnerbait I was using was destroyed by a catfish today as well but I straightened it back out.” Stated Tom.

Jeffrey Grubbs Sr of Goodrich, TX placed third among the co-anglers. He had three fish weighing in at 8.37 lbs to earn a check for $350.

“I caught them on all kinds of baits today but had a few come off at the boat.  I did lose one that was over 5 lbs today that would have helped.” Explained Jeff.

In fourth place among the co-anglers, Richard Burkhart of Caddo Mills, TX brought in three bass for 7.72 lbs.  Robby Carson of Carrollton, TX finished in fifth place with three bass at 7.00 lbs even.

The biggest bass for the co-anglers was caught by Ted Teegarden of Denison, TX weighing 4.90 lbs and was the only fish he caught just one hour before weighing in.  Ted took home $185.00 for his catch.

Slated for October 28th, the next divisional tournament will be the Area Championship held on Lake Texoma at Highport Marina near Denison, TX.  At the end of the season, the best anglers from across the nation advance to the 2018 Ray Scott Championship, slated for the Red River in Shreveport & Bossier City, LA.
