Harmon Davis Wins on Grand

Harmon Davis of Marlow, OK won the American Bass Anglers Ram Truck Open Series Oklahoma Division tournament held Aug 12th on Grand Lake of the Cherokees.  With unpredictable weather during practice and rain forecasted for Saturday, the field was greeted with a break in the clouds at takeoff and the rain held off, of course, until weigh in started at 3:00.
Running out of Wolf Creek in the City of Grove, Oklahoma, Harmon was able to put together a 5-fish limit weighing 15.85 lbs.  For the Boater Division victory, Davis took home a check for $5,000.
“I stayed mid lake today running points.  Most of my bites were on top water but I managed a few on a crankbait.  I just hit as many points as possible.  I had a good practice yesterday and probably had 20 lbs by mistake.  If it would have rained earlier today like it is now I may have caught that again but I am happy with the outcome.” Said Harmon.

In second place on the boaters was Kirk Smith of Edmond, OK. Smith came across the stage and weighed in just barely behind Davis with five fish for 15.78 lbs. Kirk took home a check for $800.00

“I went down lake and stayed offshore.  I fished main lake points as well and moved around until I found the right one. I got on one spot and had 6 fish in a row so it was just a matter of timing too.  I culled probably 6 or 7 times with 2 baits, a football jig and crankbait.  Good day of fishing but just a little bit shy of what I needed.” Said Smith.

Jeremy Johnson of Henryetta, OK managed a 5-fish limit that weighed in at 14.52 lbs to finish in 3rd place and $600.00.  Weather conditions looked as if the fishing was going to be good as overcast skies were present for the entire day, but only 12 of the 50 boaters were able to catch a limit. The fishing was tough for everyone.  You had to grind it out to get the quality bites for sure.

Finishing in fourth, John Simonof of Jacksonville, AR brought in 5 fish for 13.78.  In fifth was Dane Coale of Norman, OK with five fish for 13.64 lbs.

The biggest bass for the boaters was caught by Randy Wilson of Edmond, OK.  Randy caught one that weighed 5.50 lbs to take home a check for $490.00.

In the Co-Angler Division, Mitch Baskett of Yukon, OK locked in first place with a three fish 9.87-pound limit.  Anchored with a 5.23-pound kicker, Baskett took home a check for $1000.00.

“Not much to tell you really, my first fish bit at 930 and I went the rest of the day thinking that was going to be it.  Finally at 2:40 I got bit and it was the 5 lber on a magnum trick worm.  That woke me up, got my blood going, and just 5 minutes later I caught my 3rd keeper and here I am.  There was nothing in between.  No short fish, no other bites that I missed, we both (my boater and I) fished a clean day and had a good time and I’m tickled to be up here right now.”  Said Baskett.

Coming in second place on the Co-Angler side was John Binz of Mesquite, TX.  Binz locked in his position with three-fish weighing 9.06 pounds. Binz received a check for $250.00 for his efforts.

“Good day.  It took all day to get a limit.  I only caught the 3 keepers.  I was using a white swim jig today.  I caught my first fish at 12, then 2 and 2:30.  We did a lot of running to find the right water.”  Said Binz.

Justin Fuller of Broken Arrow, OK came in third place for the day after bringing in three fishing weighing 8.42 pounds. Justin took home a check of $225 for his third-place finish.

“We were in Honey Creek today.  I was throwing a football jig.  I caught all 3 of them by 9 and that was it.  The rest of the day was searching for more bites but it never happened for us.  We targeted shorelines and some areas with docks but only got bit on the bare shorelines.  Nothing on docks.”  Said Fuller.

In fourth place among the co-anglers, Patrick Weir from Broken Arrow, OK brought in three bass for 7.52.  Shane Cashman of Henryetta, OK finished in fifth place with two bass at 6.59 pounds.

Slated for the end of October, the next divisional tournament is the 2-day championship being held on Lake Texoma out of Highport Marina. At the end of the season, the best anglers from across the nation advance the 2018 Ray Scott Championship, slated for the Red River in Bossier City, LA.
