Nutter wins on the Chesapeake Bay
Michael B. Nutter of La Plata, Maryland won the American Bass Anglers Ram Truck Open Series Maryland Division tournament, held June 3rd on the Chesapeake Bay.
Running out of Anchor Boats Marina in North East, Maryland, Michael caught five bass weighing 20.46 pounds. He anchored his bag with a 4.52-pound kicker. For the Boater Division victory, Nutter took home a check for $5000.
“I started in Furnace Bay with a white chatter bait and a frog, I only caught 2 in there” Nutter said. “Then I moved out to the grass flats and started throwing a white 4” swim bait. I was just swimming it through and caught fish all day.”
In second for the boaters, David Kovack of Lancaster, PA landed a five-bass tournament limit going 19.97 pounds with a 5.05-pound kicker. He collected $1000 for the effort.
“I fished out on the flats all day, I was throwing a swim jig, and a 4” perch color swimbait. I just swam it slow through the grass.” Said Kovack.
Robert Steiner of Marriottsville, MD took third for the boaters with five bass going 19.15 pounds. He anchored his catch with a 4.70-pound kicker to earn $650.
“I used a white and chartreuse chatter bait and a black/blue frog, I was culling by 8:30 and caught 14 or 15 fish all day.” Said Steiner.
Finishing fourth, Michael Roselle of La Plata, MD landed a five-bass limit for 18.80 pounds including a 4.54-pound kicker.
Jermell Fleming of Harrisburg, PA rounded out the top five boaters with five bass at 18.25 pounds topped by a 5.55-pound kicker.
Todd Neale of Woodbridge, MD brought in the big bass for the boaters weighing in at 6.18 pounds. Todd pocketed $540 for his efforts.
In the Co-Angler Division, Bill Griffett Jr. of Oxford, NJ takes first with three bass going 12.42 pounds. He sealed his victory with a 5.03-pound kicker to pocket a check for $1500.
“This was my first time here, we went out on the flats and threw a swim jig in a bluegill color all day. I just kept ripping it through the grass.” Said Griffett.
Taking second for the co-anglers, Brian Grant of Wind Gap, PA brought in a three-bass division limit weighing 12.2 pounds including a 4.05-pound kicker. He collected $500 for the effort.
“We were fishing dock pilings all day, I was throwing a 4” shaky head in green pumpkin/chartreuse. Just working it real slow.” Said Grant.
Danny Moffat Jr of White Plains, MD placed third among the co-anglers with three bass going 11.96 pounds. He anchored his catch with a 4.11-pound kicker to earn $400.
“We were shallow in about 3’ of water, I only caught 3 fish and I was using a top water frog in natural color. We stayed on the flats all day.” Said Moffat.
In fourth place among the co-anglers, Wayne D. Hill of Waldorf, MD brought in three bass for 11.93 pounds including a 6.35-pound kicker.
Roland L Gittings of Perryville MD finished in fifth place with three bass at 11.54 pounds topped by a 4.61-pound kicker.
The biggest bass for the co-anglers was caught by Wayne D Hill of Waldorf, MD that weighed 6.25 pounds and Wayne pocketed $250 for his catch. This was also the big bass for the tournament. Wayne received a new Abu Garcia reel valued at $159 for catching his fish with an Abu Garcia reel.
Slated for September 9th and 10th, the next divisional tournament is the 2-day championship which will be held on the Potomac River out of Smallwood State Park near La Plata, MD. At the end of the season, the best anglers from across the nation advance the 2018 Ray Scott Championship, slated for the Red River in Shreveport-Bossier, Louisiana in April 2018.
