Chester Wins Area 3 Championship

Mike Chester of Warner Robins, Georgia won the American Bass Anglers Ram Truck Open Series Area 3 Championship between the Georgia and Alabama South divisions tournament held September 17th & 18th on Lake Eufaula.

Running out of Lakepoint Resort State Park near Eufaula, Alabama, Mike caught nine bass over a two day period weighing a total of 27.03 pounds. For the Boater division victory, Chester took home a check for $10,000 and will be receiving a new SIMMS Challenger rainsuit from SIMMS for his win. “I caught my fish on a frog. I had three rods on my deck, two frogs and a fluke. They just ate the frog so I never picked up the fluke. The bite was better later and the sun helped the most. I only burned a half tank of gas in four days. It was a blast!” Chester said.

In second for the Boaters, Chandler Ray of Arlington, Georgia landed ten bass totaling 24.03 pounds. He collected $1,100 for the effort. “Yesterday (Saturday) I started off in hydrilla and caught a few keepers. Today just didn’t feel right so I started off deep and had my limit by 1:00 p.m. and only caught six keepers all day.” Ray said.

Russell Hazelton of Enterprise, Alabama took third for the Boaters with seven bass totaling 24.01 pounds. Having the lead on day one with 20.91 pounds, Hazelton only managed to catch 3.10 pounds on day two to come up a little short of the win. He earned $1,000. “I was in the same area as the leader (Chester) and those fish were hammered pretty hard both days. I was only able to practice for two hours the other day so I’m proud of where I ended up today. The lord was good to me and I had a great time.” Hazelton said.

Finishing in fourth place, Ronnie Ray of Phenix City, Alabama weighing in ten bass totaling 23.61 pounds. He earned $800 for his efforts.

Rounding out the top five was Mike York of Thomaston, Georgia weighing in ten bass totaling 22.01 pounds. He collected $600 for his efforts.

The biggest bass for the boaters was caught by Michael Meason of Newnan, Georgia who had a 7.20-pound kicker and pocketed $640.

“I caught the big one on a frog. I lost a few fish today and certainly would’ve liked to have had a co-angler today." Meason said.

In the Co-Angler division, Justin Girdner of Wetumpka, Alabama won with five bass totaling 11.96 pounds over a two day time period. He pocketed a check for $5,000 and will also be receiving a new SIMMS Challenger rainsuit from SIMMS for his win.

“I caught most of my fish yesterday (Saturday) on a spinner bait fishing a flat, targeting hydrilla patches. Today it was a swim jig and shakey head. Winning $5000 at a weekend event is awesome!”   Girdner said.

Taking second for the Co-Anglers, Gerald Bozeman of Sylvester, Georgia brought in five bass totaling 10.80 pounds. He collected $600 for the effort. “I caught fish on day one on a shakey head and on day two on a speed worm. I lost one fish today that cost me the win.” Bozeman said.

Christopher Chavis of Rincon, Georgia placed third among the Co-Anglers with four bass going 10.38 pounds. He earned $400. “I caught my fish on a Zoom Ol’ Monster worm yesterday (Saturday) and I caught my fish today on a frog. I lost a few small fish but I only weighed two fish each day and that could have made a big difference.” Chavis said.

In fourth place among the Co-Anglers, George Haynie of Cordele, Georgia brought in three bass for 10.11 pounds.

Richard Hudson of Ramer, Alabama finished in fifth place with four bass at 9.80 pounds.

The biggest bass for the Co-Anglers was caught by Timothy Woods of Midville, Georgia that weighed 5.99 pounds and pocketed $205.

The top 20 Boaters and top 20 Co-Anglers by place of finish at this event advance to the 2017 Ray Scott Championship, slated for Old Hickory Lake in Hendersonville, TN in April of 2017.
